Raw love rocks!

And I am fortunate enough to see it, capture and share it as my job! Life is good! A little background on how I got started on this journey: I have been a storyteller since the time I could speak! I started acting as a child and fell in love with the theatre the first time I stepped on a stage. I love allowing people to feel and think about things from a different perspective. I made it a goal to learn every aspect of the theatre from lighting and sound to directing and of course acting. When I was 20, I packed up my car and moved to LA where my love for film was born, and since then, I have had the privilege of acting on stages from Los Angeles to London and many places in between.

I approached film the same way I did theatre, wanting to learn everything from the inside out and back in again! I started making mini movies of family events and found that same excitement in the editing room that I found on stage. I could edit for hours on end and not even realize that so much time had gone by. It was love and I haven’t lost that excitement!

Wedding Films have opened up a whole new world for me. Before I made them I, like many peeps out there, imagined some sweaty old dude who would do lots of zooming and shaky cam moves as he flirted with the bridesmaids. I’m so happy to say that this is not the case! Some of the most innovative movies are now coming from event filmmakers! Wedding films allow us to showcase the best sides of humanity. We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with images of the superficial side of humanity. Wedding films showcase the our beauty.

StarFruit is constantly evolving, as a matter of fact we are in production, in conjunction with Jesse Kozel, for my first short film, Candy, right now! I love the diversity of projects StarFruit allows me to work on. Every time I shoot and edit a wedding film, I learn something that I can bring into my narrative works and vice versa. Who knows what the future holds for StarFruit, but right now, I am enjoying the ride!

Sage’s Inspiration

If I am feeling lost on a project, I have lots of places to head for inspiration.. Music is a huge influence on me, I play the french horn and trumpet and had a short stint as the singer of a punk band in LA.
I also find that being near the ocean helps me immensely, whether it be the animals nearby, the rust on a dock or the color of the sea foam, there is always beauty that presents itself. I feel like one of my biggest jobs is to simply allow beauty to shine through.
I am also inspired by my mentors and peers. I recently saw Werner Herzog speak about his film “Little Dieter NEEDS to FLY”. He spoke a lot about his style of filmmaking which meshes a documentary style with staging events to reach the higher truth. I feel like my Wedding Films are exactly that; a heightened sense of reality.
I also find inspiration from the great wedding filmmakers I am surrounded with. Jason Magbanua is a huge influence on me. His films are constantly evolving, yet they always retain the heart and spunk that I have come to love so much.
